Together for a brighter future

Hamburger Cluster agencies join forces in unique KLIMAready project

A 1.5-degree target, climate neutrality and sustainable processes on all levels – the goal pursued by the world, and hence by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, represents a monumental task! It is far too big and complex to be tackled by a single economic sector alone. This is why, for the first time in Hamburg’s cluster history, seven established and powerful clusters are joining forces to bring this goal within reach of all sectors.

Even now, it is evident that a lot will have to change if we are to meet political and legal sustainability objectives. Missing these targets entails potential financial penalties as well as reputational risks. Innovative solutions and collaborations are not just nice-to-have, they are crucial for the long-term success and resilience of entire industries. It is with this in mind that the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is funding the Hamburg-based KLIMAready project, which brings together seven successful industry clusters.

Three years to realise ambitious goals

Running until mid-2027, the KLIMAready project will provide active support to Hamburg-based organisations as they transform their energy systems and tackle climate-related challenges. The project will kick off with an analysis of the status quo along with a cross-sector survey. This will be used as a basis for developing ideas for possible measures. Agile methods will help to address the complexity of the issues. Developing these measures will involve identifying fields of action, subsequent networking with relevant stakeholders and the methodical development and evaluation of ideas. The findings gained from this process will be analysed and harnessed for long-term use. Thanks to the constant back-and-forth between implementing the most promising ideas and developing fresh ideas, lessons learned will be fed directly into the next project phase. Throughout the course of the project, continuous communication and public relations work will ensure that the project contents receive widespread attention. Stakeholders from Hamburg's cluster landscape, business, science, politics and society will thus have the opportunity to play a part in the KLIMAready project.

Transparent communication of regulations and general conditions

Complementing the interaction between needs assessment and the development and implementation of measures, the plan also envisages the systematic processing and provision of information on regulations and general conditions. It also includes an overview of potential subsidies as a transparent basis for taking decisions on devising possible measures.

“Over the next three years, we want to work closely with the Hamburg clusters and our member companies to develop formats that allow us to share the knowledge needed for a successful energy transformation and the implementation of sustainability strategies. Our member companies will receive individual coaching, training and workshops to help them benefit from the clusters' newly acquired expertise,” comments Leona Hitomi, KLIMAready project manager at the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany.

For the duration of the project, the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany will represent the interests of the maritime industry in the Hamburg metropolitan region and will oversee the development of expertise in the cluster organisations.
