Schleswig-Holstein: maritime economy and focal points

With an annual turnover of €8.5 bn, nearly 1,700 businesses employing some 47,000 people and at least 15 educational and research establishments, the maritime economy in Schleswig-Holstein is a significant economic factor with outstanding growth potential. Of the 29 sectors that make up the maritime economy, particular growth potential has been identified in ship, boat and yacht building, maritime supplies, ports and harbours, offshore wind energy, offshore and marine engineering and marine research technology. Marine aquaculture and "blue" biotechnology also offer clear growth opportunities.

Regional focal points in the Cluster's work:

The Maritime Cluster has been operating in Schleswig-Holstein since 2005. Since January 2011, the work has continued from the Schleswig-Holstein Office of the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany.

The focal points of the work are currently in shipbuilding, ship supplies, offshore technology, marine engineering and marine research technology. Additional areas of activity have also developed in shipping, ports and harbours, and aquaculture technology.

Half the funds for the work of the Maritime Cluster in Schleswig-Holstein come from the European Regional Development Fund, other funding from the business community, including the Schleswig-Holstein Chambers of Commerce and Industry. At present, some 80 businesses are helping to finance the work of the Schleswig-Holstein Office.
