Hamburg: maritime economy and focal points

With an overall turnover of around € 24.5 bn and more than 65,000 people employed by nearly 2,000 businesses, Hamburg Metropolitan Region is the most important centre of Northern Germany's maritime economy. Some 26,600 employees in the maritime industry and maritime services generate over 30% of the maritime economy's overall turnover in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Some 2,430 people work in 53 educational and research establishments as well. The biggest single industry in the maritime economy is the ship supply industry.

Regional focal points in the Cluster's work:

The focal points are currently in shipbuilding, ship supplies, offshore technology, marine engineering and marine research technology.

Close cooperation with other Hamburg clusters (hamburg(at)work, Hamburg Logistics Initiative and Hamburg Renewable Energies Cluster) leads to cooperation opportunities with companies from technically interesting adjoining sectors.

Other cooperation opportunities are generated via intensive contacts to companies in the fields of maritime IT, LNG supplies, energy efficiency in shipping and environmental protection technology in shipbuilding and shipping.

Another important focal point of the Cluster's work is the whole field of initial and further vocational training. After all, a lack of skilled labour is currently one of the biggest handicaps to growth for the maritime economy.
